Public Policy and Advocacy

The REACH Foundation’s policy work is driven by the Foundation’s mission and vision. Our priorities are determined by keeping in mind our priority areas and principles, cross-cutting issues and foundation initiatives.

Our VISION
...is that all poor and underserved people
in our community will have quality healthcare.

Our MISSION
...is to inform and educate the public
and facilitate access to quality healthcare for
poor and underserved people.

Our PRIORITY AREAS
…Oral Health, Mental Health &
Safety Net Services

PRINCIPLES that guide our POLICY WORK...

• All people deserve access to quality healthcare, regardless of race, ethnicity, employment and insurance status.
• Health disparities must be eliminated.

CROSS-CUTTING ISSUES...

• We support integration of healthcare services.
• Cultural competency is a critical strategy for reducing health disparities.
• Public and private policies will be effective when they facilitate fair, equitable access to comprehensive healthcare services.

WHY PUBLIC POLICY?

Public policy is an important arena for foundation action because it is essential to achieving meaningful, long-term improvements in access to quality healthcare for poor and underserved people so that all members of our community achieve optimal health.

Through a health policy platform and agenda developed in cooperation with our stakeholders, the REACH Healthcare Foundation hopes to significantly improve the effectiveness of our work.

Our strategy is to influence health policy by:
• Contributing to informed and engaged leaders
• Convening stakeholders and  supporting coalitions to further a common agenda
• Strengthening the capacity of not-for-profit organizations to be effective advocates
• Informing the public about health policy issues
• Developing strong grassroots networks

FEDERAL HEALTH REFORM

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into law on March 23, 2010. As a philanthropy dedicated to improving access and quality of health care for poor and underserved individuals, we anticipate that federal health reform will have a positive impact on health care access and quality for underserved individuals.
